About UK Nature

Funding the restoration and recovery of our natural environment, supporting thriving communities and generating green jobs

UK Nature is an institutional-scale private markets initiative investing across a range of UK Nature-based Solutions (‘NbS’) and related nature markets. Its investments will seek to enhance the UK’s ‘natural capital’ to support the recovery of key habitats, generate green jobs, develop new supply chains and support local communities through an inclusive approach to investment structuring and design.

Nature restoration projects:

UK Nature supports high-integrity Nature-based Solutions (‘NbS’) projects delivered by high-quality nature restoration practitioners, seeking to generate income opportunities for landowners and financial returns for institutional investors, as well as delivering positive social and environmental impacts that will be independently measured and reported on.

Nature-positive businesses:

UK Nature can invest into impactful businesses operating across the nature restoration value chain. Target companies will have established business models operating in the green economy and will be seeking growth capital.

What we offer

For landowners, land managers and communities

UK Nature can support impactful nature restoration projects capable of generating long-term income for landowners and land managers through a variety of structures.

We are particularly interested in talking to owners and managers of land across the UK about opportunities for afforestation and/or the restoration of degraded peatlands. In England we are also interested in opportunities to create Biodiversity Net Gain projects.

For landowners, land managers and communities, UK Nature can provide:

  • Turnkey funding covering the entire lifecycle of a project, including development activities, restoration costs and ongoing maintenance
  • A variety of up front and recurring payments for landowners, and ongoing exposure of the landowner to carbon and other nature-based markets, in the spirit of long-term partnership
  • Flexible contracting arrangements
  • Access to markets for ecosystem services, including identifying and negotiating with buyers of high-quality verified carbon credits, biodiversity units and other ecosystem services, with the potential to obtain premium pricing to reflect market leading delivery standards and diversified, high-volume credit portfolio offerings

For private, philanthropic and public sector project developers

We are seeking to build long term commercial relationships with like-minded nature restoration project delivery organisations, and can provide patient capital and a reliable source of finance to organisations seeking to scale up their activities.

We support high quality delivery partners from across the public, private and philanthropic sectors – including the country’s leading environmental NGOs – in order to develop projects across their full lifecycle, including creating investment-ready projects and taking responsibility for the restoration and lifetime management of NbS projects such as new woodlands, restored peatlands and other high-impact biodiverse habitats.

For private, philanthropic and public sector project developers, UK Nature can provide:

  • Turnkey funding covering the entire lifecycle of a project, including development activities, restoration costs and ongoing maintenance
  • Fees for designing and setting up investable high-impact NbS projects
  • Fees for restoring, maintaining and managing high-impact NbS projects
  • Funded transaction structures that share long-term project cashflows with local communities
  • Access to markets for ecosystem services, including buyers of carbon credits, biodiversity units and other ecosystem services, with the potential to obtain premium pricing

Impact and integrity

The UK Nature Impact Fund has been designed with the aim of delivering social and environmental impact with a high level of integrity. The key support mechanisms for achieving this are our partnerships with the environmental NGO community, independent advisors and sector experts.

UK Nature will monitor and report on a range of impact metrics, including 5 core impact indicators:

1. Woodlands

Hectares of woodlands created

2. Peatlands

Hectares of peatlands restored

3. Climate mitigation

Tonnes of CO2e sequestered or abated

4. Green jobs

Number of green jobs created or directly supported

5. Green spaces

Hectares of newly created or upgraded green space made accessible to the public

Science and Impact Advisory Panel (SIAP)

Comprising leading scientists and academics in the natural and social sciences, the SIAP is a unique feature of UK Nature, providing independent advice and insight on investment proposals, as well as thought leadership on recent and emerging science across relevant ecosystems and habitats, key industry and policy developments.

The Nature Markets Principles

UK Nature has adopted the Nature Markets Principles for engagement in high-integrity UK NbS markets, co-developed by the UK’s leading environmental NGOs in collaboration with Finance Earth. The Nature Markets Principles are voluntary principles for responsible participation in nature markets, for both buyers and sellers of ecosystem services.

Support of the UK’s leading environmental NGOs

UK Nature has been developed in collaboration with the country’s leading environmental NGOs which are also key delivery partners, ensuring projects are designed, delivered and managed to the highest standards. UK Nature aims to support the scale up of NGO restoration activities to help deliver on the UK’s targets for net zero and 30by30.
